Website design and development

delimiter image

Each Vanilla Rain website is designed and built by the same studio in Newbury, West Berkshire, so the pages you approve are the pages that go live. Sites are built in WordPress, organised around what your visitors need to find, and handed over with editing access for the people who will keep them current.

Responsive layouts, landing pages, a content management system your team can use and attention to load times are all part of a standard build, not extras. What varies between projects is the scope: how many page templates, how much content, and what the site has to connect to.

The work

What a website build covers

Structure before design

The pages, navigation and routes to an enquiry are mapped from the questions your customers ask. A clear structure makes the site easier to use and easier for search engines to read.

Every screen size

Layouts are designed for phones, tablets and desktops from the outset rather than squeezed down afterwards. You review working pages on a staging site, not static pictures.

Built in WordPress

WordPress gives your team a familiar editor and a wide pool of developers should you ever need one. Templates are set up so that new pages keep the design intact.

Landing pages and load times

Campaign landing pages use the site’s own templates, so visitors from ads and search land somewhere consistent. Images are sized correctly and plugins kept few to hold load times down.

Accessibility basics

Colour contrast, heading order, alt text, readable type sizes and keyboard navigation are checked during the build, so the site works for more of the people trying to use it.

Launch and handover

Redirects, analytics, Search Console and contact forms are tested at launch. Your team then gets its logins, a walk-through of the editor and the packaged source design files.

Where the work happens

Newbury, West Berkshire and further afield

If your business is in Newbury, Theale or Basingstoke, the opening workshop on structure and content can take place at your office, by arrangement. Design reviews and the build itself run remotely through a staging link anyone on your side can open. The same approach serves firms in Reading, Oxford and elsewhere in the UK, where sharing a postcode makes no difference to the result.

Questions

Common questions

What do we need to give you before the build starts?

Your logo files, any brand guidelines, the content you already have and a list of the pages you think you need. Gaps are normal. The structure work shows what is missing, and Vanilla Rain can write or edit copy if you would rather not do it yourselves.

Will we be able to update the site ourselves?

Yes. Templates are built so that adding a page, changing text or swapping an image does not break the layout. Whoever will be editing is shown how at handover, and the editable design files are packaged up for you to keep.

Our developer or IT supplier is staying. Can you work with them?

Yes. If your developer is looking after integrations or hosting, Vanilla Rain can provide the design and front end, and the split of responsibilities goes into the written scope so each side knows what it owns before work begins.

How is the price worked out?

From the scope: the number of page templates, the volume of content, any shop or booking features and what the site must connect to. That scope is written up and fixed in price, and you see both before committing to anything.

Plan the new site

Send a link to your current site, or a few lines about the business if there is no site yet, and list the three things the new one must do better. Or call Alistair on 07585 263824.
