We start by mapping what people are actually trying to do and the points where they currently give up. That usually comes from watching people use the existing product rather than from a workshop, because most interface problems turn out to be decisions made for internal reasons that nobody outside the business shares.
We design the whole path, not only the successful one. Empty states, errors, loading, permissions and the screens people see when something has gone wrong are where products feel unfinished, and they are usually the last thing anyone specifies.
The output is a component library with type, colour, spacing and behaviour defined, so the tenth screen costs less than the first and the product stays consistent after we have gone.
